F*&! Joe Torre

Since Joe Torre breaks our hearts, this blog will break his balls. Every day of the season I will detail the errors, misjudgements, and omissions that make him the most overrated manger in the history of the game (even more than Tommy Lasorda!). But Joe Torre is not just one bum in hero's clothing (i.e. the pinstripes); he is the quintessential counterfeit of excellence, a figure who embodies the triumph of the ersatz that pervades every aspect of our culture. No organization in sport, nay in civilization generally, has manifested a committment to continuing greatness like the New York Yankees, a beacon to all, in every field of endeavor, that the best is always possible. How intolerable is it then that the Yankees should be managed by a mediocrity on stilts, a figure with a reputation for greatness without any of the attributes thereof. Beginning with Torre and ending with Torre, this blog will look to smash idols we create out of inadvertence, ignorance, and complacency.

A Logic

For all those bloggers who think France deserved to win the World Cup because they "dominate the game." Dessert in sports is determined strictly by fulfilling the object of the contest. dominating play is but a means to that object, which is scoring. Ergo, absent fraud or referee malfeasance, the team that wins is the team that deserved to win, which is not to say they were the "best" team (though inn this case they were). Since "real" americans hate soccer, you'd think soccer fans would be as intelligent than baseball fans. To judge from the aether, not at all.

So, did Giambi get screwed by Ozzie Guillen. He's got a bunch more home runs than Konerko, more RBI, a significantly higher OBP and OPS. The guy's on pace to hit 53 home runs and drive in over 140 this year--and that's without steroids (presumably). Impressive. Yeah, his batting avg is low, but that's not why he's in the lineup. He hits home runs and he walks, and he does both about as well as anyone in the game. I'd take Giambi over Konerko.

I can only say, kill the DH, kill it now, kill it forever. Make everyone play the game. the Sox and the Yanks should have to bear the burden of Big Poopie and Giambi's defense if they want their bats. And the same with Tome and Chicago.

Oh, one more thing. what I can't understand is why Mussina wasn't picked for the All-Star game. 10-3, 3.24 is better than Kenny Rogers, way better than Mark Buerhle, better than Scott Kazmir, Barry Zito and of course Mark Redman. On a par with Santana. Liariano (who didn't get picked either, at first) and Hallady are the only starters with better first halves and Mussina's career dwarfs every starter on the team. On this point, as on many others, Ozzie Guillen is just indefensible.
