F*&! Joe Torre

Since Joe Torre breaks our hearts, this blog will break his balls. Every day of the season I will detail the errors, misjudgements, and omissions that make him the most overrated manger in the history of the game (even more than Tommy Lasorda!). But Joe Torre is not just one bum in hero's clothing (i.e. the pinstripes); he is the quintessential counterfeit of excellence, a figure who embodies the triumph of the ersatz that pervades every aspect of our culture. No organization in sport, nay in civilization generally, has manifested a committment to continuing greatness like the New York Yankees, a beacon to all, in every field of endeavor, that the best is always possible. How intolerable is it then that the Yankees should be managed by a mediocrity on stilts, a figure with a reputation for greatness without any of the attributes thereof. Beginning with Torre and ending with Torre, this blog will look to smash idols we create out of inadvertence, ignorance, and complacency.

CORRECTIONS (MINE) AND EXCUSES (THEIRS)

It turns out dustin McGowan hadn't won a game as a starter since August of 2005, not May 2006 as I mistakenly reported. Apparently the Yankees didn't feel too bad about handing him his biannual victory. skanky Manky reported that he has electric stuff with a 96-97 mile fastball. Of course when your struggling to hit 220 I'm betting everybody's stuff looks electric. Jeter confirmed that he threw hard and never straight and you couldn't be patient with him. Of course Jeter went 2-4 and if the rest of the club did likewise, Mr. McGowan's last win would still be a distant memory. Of course the real question is given that he is the second coming of Walter Johnson, why can't he beat anyone but the Yankees?

"Glaus comes up. he's hitting 271, except against lefties (like Villone), he's hitting 458! His OBP against lefties is 552!"

That is utterly stunning.

Did any reporters pose this question to Joe--why not any of the righties in the pen in this spot? including Mo who needs more work to get his stuff together?

or, more shocking that Torre's stupidity, which we've long recognized, was Joe really just conceding the game at this point?

obviously he was by the time he went to Myers. But when Glaus came to the plate, the score was 3-0. Officially, that's still a close game. But I guess we give Torre credit for being able to understand exactly how bad his club is. For this team, being down 3-0 in the 7th is the equivalent of being down 20-0 in the 9th with Cy Young on the mound, Walter Johnson warming in the pen, and Minky, Nieves, and Cairo due up.

So the options now are: 1) Torre is such a bad tactician he leaves Villone in with the bases loaded to face a guy with monster numbers off lefties; or 2) Torre is as pessimisitc about the team as we are--he believes his team is incapable of winning once they are down beyond the 3rd inning or so; but instead of looking to make changes, he is sufficently content with this state of things, and he concedes a game in the 7th rather than doing everything in his power to force these losers to at least try to win.
