F*&! Joe Torre

Since Joe Torre breaks our hearts, this blog will break his balls. Every day of the season I will detail the errors, misjudgements, and omissions that make him the most overrated manger in the history of the game (even more than Tommy Lasorda!). But Joe Torre is not just one bum in hero's clothing (i.e. the pinstripes); he is the quintessential counterfeit of excellence, a figure who embodies the triumph of the ersatz that pervades every aspect of our culture. No organization in sport, nay in civilization generally, has manifested a committment to continuing greatness like the New York Yankees, a beacon to all, in every field of endeavor, that the best is always possible. How intolerable is it then that the Yankees should be managed by a mediocrity on stilts, a figure with a reputation for greatness without any of the attributes thereof. Beginning with Torre and ending with Torre, this blog will look to smash idols we create out of inadvertence, ignorance, and complacency.

OFF DAY ITEM

As the Yanks prepare to take on the Orioles, it is worth noting that they are closer to this sorry team, which has already fired its manager, than they are to the wild card, and over twice as close to the O's than they are to the Red Sox.

This has been one of the most bizarre seasons I can remember as a Yankee fan. Yet at the same time, it has also been very predictable. Even when the Yankees were at 22-29, I knew they would make some sort of a run. 17 games later, after a 14-3 run, their record was at 35-32. They had cut Boston's lead to only 7.5 games.

However, I knew that this positive stretch would not last forever. After all, how far could a 38 year old Mussina and 44 year old Clemens take you? Or an unreliable bullpen? How about an inconsistent Abreau and a brittle Damon? Well, guess what? After a horrible 1-5 stretch on visits to a medicore Colorado team and a terrible San Fransicsco squad, the Yankees are under .500 again. It's a damn shame too. Arod is on his way to one of his most explosive seasons ever, and it's all being wasted.
