F*&! Joe Torre

Since Joe Torre breaks our hearts, this blog will break his balls. Every day of the season I will detail the errors, misjudgements, and omissions that make him the most overrated manger in the history of the game (even more than Tommy Lasorda!). But Joe Torre is not just one bum in hero's clothing (i.e. the pinstripes); he is the quintessential counterfeit of excellence, a figure who embodies the triumph of the ersatz that pervades every aspect of our culture. No organization in sport, nay in civilization generally, has manifested a committment to continuing greatness like the New York Yankees, a beacon to all, in every field of endeavor, that the best is always possible. How intolerable is it then that the Yankees should be managed by a mediocrity on stilts, a figure with a reputation for greatness without any of the attributes thereof. Beginning with Torre and ending with Torre, this blog will look to smash idols we create out of inadvertence, ignorance, and complacency.

Do the Math

Given the weakness of the pen and the weakness at the back of the rotation (which stresses the pen), the Yanks can only stay in the race if Mussina, Johnson and Wang pitch well. they have collectively provided 5 good outings in their last 6 starts. Are the Yanks 5-1 in those games, no they're 2-4 and those three wasted starts correspond exactly to the three games they've lost in the standings to the sox over that period (from 1 game up to 2 down). It's not just the pitching as the commentators seem to think.

Nobody else in baseball needs a jeter plus a giambi plus a matsui plus a sheffield plus a cano plus a posada plus a williams just to win ball games. the truth is this team for all their offensive talent never hit well with men on base, even when they had sheff and matsui. they are a collection of offensive stars; they are not, thanks in part to the choke factor, anywhere near the offensive team they are cracked up to be. And when sheff and matsui were here in april and may they really weren't all that much better. sheffield, like arod and posada and williams was awful with men on and hit into too amny dps and matsui really wasn't playing very well when he went down. the problem with this team last year and this has been their belief in their own inflated reputation. They are the anti-1996 Yankees.
