F*&! Joe Torre

Since Joe Torre breaks our hearts, this blog will break his balls. Every day of the season I will detail the errors, misjudgements, and omissions that make him the most overrated manger in the history of the game (even more than Tommy Lasorda!). But Joe Torre is not just one bum in hero's clothing (i.e. the pinstripes); he is the quintessential counterfeit of excellence, a figure who embodies the triumph of the ersatz that pervades every aspect of our culture. No organization in sport, nay in civilization generally, has manifested a committment to continuing greatness like the New York Yankees, a beacon to all, in every field of endeavor, that the best is always possible. How intolerable is it then that the Yankees should be managed by a mediocrity on stilts, a figure with a reputation for greatness without any of the attributes thereof. Beginning with Torre and ending with Torre, this blog will look to smash idols we create out of inadvertence, ignorance, and complacency.

Query

Does the postponement help or hurt the Yanks?

Does it break the momentum from the other night? Or does it give their bullpen some needed rest? Does it make Verlander even rustier (hw hasn't pitched in 11 days now? Are they better in the day than at night? Does the extra day help Mussina at all?

I don't see that the rainout makes a big difference, though perhaps it helps the Tigers slightly. Neither team is so exhausted that the night off makes much difference, though I suppose any kind of breather may be a small plus for the Tigers, who have lost 6 in a row. Moose doesn't like long rest, but I've never noticed a real effect on his game (see, e.g., 6-1/3 shutout innings on long rest vs. Tampa on Sept. 12).

The only real benefit for Detroit is that our bullpen will not get a day off before Randy Johnson's 3 inning, 6 run outing tomorrow, meaning the bullpen could get pretty ragged by Sunday. Of course, I'm looking for 7-8 strong innings from Moose, in which case none of that should matter....

I'm not sure how the delay affects the Yankees, but it sure screwed me. I'm in my office listening to the game on the internet radio in between meetings and obligations instead of enjoying a nice leisurely game on tv last night.

Bottom of the first, bases loaded, two outs, A-Rod at the plate...

...and he strikes out looking. Nice work. The start of another terrific postseason for A-Rod.

Bottom of the 9th, Cabrera on first, Posada at the plate. John Sterling: "I doubt the Yankees will bunt; I don't even know if Posada can bunt." As though this is not a problem but just one of those quirks of fate that you can't control.

Posada of course strikes out as a result.
