F*&! Joe Torre

Since Joe Torre breaks our hearts, this blog will break his balls. Every day of the season I will detail the errors, misjudgements, and omissions that make him the most overrated manger in the history of the game (even more than Tommy Lasorda!). But Joe Torre is not just one bum in hero's clothing (i.e. the pinstripes); he is the quintessential counterfeit of excellence, a figure who embodies the triumph of the ersatz that pervades every aspect of our culture. No organization in sport, nay in civilization generally, has manifested a committment to continuing greatness like the New York Yankees, a beacon to all, in every field of endeavor, that the best is always possible. How intolerable is it then that the Yankees should be managed by a mediocrity on stilts, a figure with a reputation for greatness without any of the attributes thereof. Beginning with Torre and ending with Torre, this blog will look to smash idols we create out of inadvertence, ignorance, and complacency.

Slammin' Joe

Torre's explanation [of batting AROD 6th} that he might as well pull the lineup out of a hat fell short. Torre is getting paid $7 million a year to manage the Yankees, and if he actually used the hat method, he should return the money.

John Hayman

Actually he should return the money in any case.

I think the bottom line is, the Yankees have a great lineup, but they have the weakest pitching staff of the American League playoff teams. Their rotation with the Tigers is a push, but the Tigers have a deeper bullpen. The A's have deeper starting pitching, and the Twins (who may now be toast) have a better combination of the 2. On the one hand the Yanks lineup is much much better than anyone else's. On the other, pitching is much much more important than the lineup. So anything could happen. they absolutely should beat the Tigers (which doesn't mean they will) but the A's or Twins will be a struggle. I think they've got the match up they want--so there's no excuses, but slow joe's already made some mistakes (Villone, Melky, Sheff at first) and the series hasn't even started yet. Expect nothing; enjoy anything. And remember, when they lose, at least we didn't fall for the hype.

Well, after the game, I'll just say: Jeter.
